AMVCA Drama: Lilian Afegbai Says “I Was Wrong” After Online Reaction

Following her recent social media outburst, Lilian Afegbai has now apologised to the organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.

The Nollywood actress and producer shared the apology across her social media platforms, admitting her reaction was inappropriate.

“This apology should have come earlier. That tweet should never have happened—no excuse,” she wrote.

She acknowledged that her comments were disrespectful, not only to the AMVCA organisers but also to the nominees, her To Kill A Monkey team, and her supporters.

Admitting her emotions got the better of her, she said her reaction came from disappointment, but clarified that it still didn’t justify her behaviour.

Reflecting on her journey, Lilian explained that she had often felt overlooked, and saw To Kill A Monkey as a defining moment in her career—one she held onto strongly.

However, not receiving a nomination triggered a response she now describes as coming from “a place of hurt and entitlement,” something she insists is not in line with her character.

“I was wrong, and I am sorry,” she added, while asking for another chance to do better. “I no go fall una hand again.”

Her apology comes shortly after she publicly criticised the AMVCA following the release of this year’s nominees, where her name was absent.

In her earlier reaction, she wrote: “AMVCA SMH.”

In a follow-up post, she added that while she believes everything happens for a reason, she didn’t need a nomination for validation. She also maintained that her role as Idia in To Kill A Monkey stood out, stating that no one trended like the character last year and rating the performance highly, before dismissing the award.
