Azeezat Shorunmu Reveals the Painful Experience That Changed Her Voice Forever
Many people know Azeezat Shorunmu today for her raspy and distinct voice, but only a few truly know the painful story behind it. The popular Nollywood actress and producer recently opened up in an interview with Oyinmomo TV, and what she shared wasn’t just emotional—it was deep.
According to her, everything changed during the shoot of a movie titled Apase. It was the first day on set. Just as the work was about to begin, she received heartbreaking news—fellow actress, Mummy Surutu, had lost her child.
That moment broke something inside her.
“I didn’t know what to do,” Azeezat confessed. “She was already booked for the movie, everything was set. But hearing that kind of news just scattered me. I started shouting. And from that moment, my voice changed.”
At first, she didn’t think it was anything serious. She assumed it was a normal sore throat that would ease with time. But as days turned to weeks, and weeks to months, nothing changed. Four months later, reality hit hard—her voice was no longer the same.
“I tried all I could,” she said. “I took drugs, I prayed, I used anointing oil. I did everything. But by the time my voice came back, it came back as something else. Thin. Broken. Different.”
She spoke on how the situation affected her mentally and emotionally. There were times she wanted to talk freely, to express herself fully, but couldn’t. And that helplessness was painful.
“That was when I truly understood what it means to lose your voice—not just physically, but emotionally,” she said.
Yet, even in the face of that loss, she has continued to rise. Her voice may have changed, but her story and strength remain loud and clear.
