Chikungunya Cases Rise in UK as Travellers Face Increased Risk

Health authorities in the United Kingdom have raised concern over a growing number of chikungunya cases, with infections linked to travel rising sharply this year.

Data from the UK Health Security Agency shows that cases increased to 160 in 2025, up from 112 in 2024 — the highest level recorded so far. Most of the infections were traced to travellers returning from countries like India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

Chikungunya, which is spread by infected mosquitoes, can cause fever, severe joint pain, headaches, and skin rashes. While many people recover within weeks, some cases can lead to long-term joint pain.

Health experts are now advising travellers to take simple precautions, including using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and sleeping under treated nets where necessary.

Officials also noted that the virus is gradually spreading to parts of Europe, including France and Italy, as warmer temperatures create more suitable conditions for mosquito activity.

Meanwhile, cases of Malaria remain relatively high in the UK, although slightly reduced, while Dengue infections have seen a noticeable decline.
