Goodluck Jonathan 2027: Is the Former President Planning a Comeback?

It looks like the talk about former President Goodluck Jonathan returning to politics is getting serious. Reports now suggest that some of his loyalists in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are already moving around, trying to sell his candidacy ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to The Nation, there are strong signals from Jonathan’s camp that he may actually be considering another shot at the presidency, despite earlier claims that he wasn’t interested. Sources at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja revealed that consultations are ongoing to draw him back into active politics, and he has even reached out to some influential figures in the country.

One of those he’s said to have visited is former President Ibrahim Babangida. Meanwhile, a close ally of Jonathan explained that his recent statement about betrayal in the 2015 election wasn’t just casual talk, it was a calculated move to gain public sympathy.

The ally also noted that if Jonathan truly wasn’t interested in running, he could have easily come out to say so. Instead, his remarks reminded some people of the speech he gave in September 2010, right before contesting for the PDP ticket in 2011.

On the other hand, Jonathan’s cousin, Robert Azibaola, has rubbished claims that the former president had ruled himself out of the 2027 race. According to him, Jonathan never said he wouldn’t contest, and the so-called “aide” being quoted in some reports doesn’t even exist.

For now, Jonathan hasn’t officially declared, but one thing is clear he hasn’t closed the door either.
