Nigeria Targets Faster Cargo Clearance with New Digital Port System

The initiative, known as the National Single Window (NSW), is designed to connect all port agencies on one platform, cutting paperwork, reducing delays, and improving transparency. Vice President Kashim Shettima described it as a bold step toward fixing long-standing inefficiencies in Nigeria’s ports.

Speaking at a recent Ports and Customs Efficiency Committee meeting in Abuja, Shettima said the system will help Nigeria compete with other African trade hubs. He noted that under the current process, clearing goods in Nigeria costs about 30% more than in neighbouring countries, mainly due to slow documentation and manual handling.

Shettima pointed out that Nigeria’s ports currently experience cargo delays nearly five times the global benchmark, stressing that such inefficiency hurts trade and growth. “That has to change.”

To make the reform effective, Shettima directed key agencies, including the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), NAFDAC, and SON to jointly create a reliable weights and measures framework that protects both traders and consumers.

He also revealed that a pending Executive Order on Joint Physical Inspection, awaiting President Tinubu’s approval, will help unify agency operations and speed up cargo processing. “It’s time for our systems to speak one language,” the Vice President said, stressing that inter-agency rivalry must give way to teamwork.

Other government officials echoed his message. Zahrah Audu, head of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), said uncoordinated port processes have hurt Nigeria’s Ease of Doing Business ranking. She called for stronger accountability and collaboration across all port sectors.

The Managing Director of NPA, Abubakar Dantsoho, agreed, noting that progress is already visible through joint inspection efforts. He emphasized that technology, infrastructure improvement, and staff training remain key to boosting port efficiency and keeping Nigeria competitive in global trade.
