Nigerian Man Killed in Toronto Bus Terminal Shooting, Suspect Charged With Murder
A 46-year-old Nigerian man, Osemwengie Irorere, has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a bus terminal in Toronto, Canada, marking the city’s first homicide of 2026.
The incident happened on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal, near Yorkdale Road and Allen Road. Police say both the victim and the suspect boarded the same GO bus at the terminal before the shooting occurred.
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly shot Irorere while they were on the bus and then fled the area on foot. Emergency responders arrived shortly after 7 p.m. and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police later located the suspect inside Yorkdale Mall, where he was arrested. A firearm was also recovered during the arrest.
The suspect has been identified as Tyrel Gibson, a 40-year-old Toronto resident. He has now been charged with first-degree murder. Authorities confirmed that Gibson was scheduled to appear before the court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on January 5, 2026.
Toronto Police described the case as the city’s first homicide of the year and appealed to the public for any information that could assist the investigation.
Meanwhile, reports by the Toronto Sun indicate that Gibson has a long criminal history, with past convictions linked to violent offences, including attempted murder, assault, robbery, firearm-related crimes, and other serious charges.
