Nigerian Military, U.S. Launch Joint Precision Airstrikes on ISIS-Linked Fighters in Northwest
The Nigerian military has acknowledged the role of the United States in a coordinated operation that led to precision airstrikes against foreign ISIS-linked terrorist elements operating in parts of Northwest Nigeria.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria disclosed that the strikes were executed following extensive intelligence gathering and close strategic coordination with U.S. security partners. The operation, officials said, was aimed at disrupting the activities of transnational terrorist groups attempting to establish a presence within Nigeria’s borders.
Confirming the development on Friday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, described the mission as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.
According to him, the airstrikes were carried out based on credible intelligence and careful operational planning, with emphasis placed on accuracy to limit collateral damage and protect civilian lives.
He noted that the action sends a strong message that Nigeria, working alongside trusted international partners, will not allow foreign fighters or extremist groups to gain ground in any part of the country.
Major General Uba also reaffirmed the military’s resolve to safeguard lives and property, stressing that the Armed Forces will continue to collaborate with sister security agencies and international allies to restore and maintain peace nationwide.
The development follows earlier confirmation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Nigeria’s ongoing security and intelligence cooperation with international partners, including the United States.
In a separate statement signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government explained that the partnership—focused on intelligence sharing and strategic coordination in line with international law—has enhanced Nigeria’s ability to carry out precise counter-terrorism operations.
The ministry emphasized that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy prioritizes civilian protection, national unity, and the rights of all citizens. It also confirmed that no civilian casualties were recorded during the airstrikes, which targeted identified terrorist camps.
