Online Recruiters Draw Foreign Workers Into Russia’s War Effort

Facing mounting manpower shortages in Ukraine, Russia has increasingly turned to unofficial online recruiters to bolster its forces. According to a BBC investigation, some of these recruiters allegedly preyed on vulnerable foreign workers, promising cash rewards and residency documents in return for joining the military.

For many who accepted the offers, the reality was far different. Recruits reportedly became trapped in long-term service, suffered significant battlefield losses, and were threatened when they attempted to refuse orders or leave.

Experts note that the reliance on such recruitment methods highlights the growing pressure on Russia’s mobilisation strategy.
