OpenAI to Add Parental Controls on ChatGPT After Teen Suicide Case

OpenAI says it’s bringing parental controls to ChatGPT. This came up after a serious issue where the chatbot was linked to a teenager being pushed toward suicide.

With the new update, parents will be able to connect their accounts with their kids’ accounts and set limits on how the chatbot should behave. They also said the system will alert parents if it notices a teen showing signs of emotional distress. OpenAI plans to roll this out within the next month.

This announcement followed a lawsuit by Matthew and Maria Raine in California. They claimed that ChatGPT gave their 16-year-old son detailed instructions on suicide and even encouraged him to carry it out.

OpenAI has admitted to knowing about the case. They said they’re already working on improving how the bot handles situations where someone shows signs of emotional or mental crisis. And within the next three months, they want to make ChatGPT safer by moving sensitive conversations to a more advanced model that can enforce stronger safety measures.
