Patience Ozokwor Explains Why Nollywood Actors Struggle Financially
Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has opened up on why many actors in the industry struggle financially.
Speaking during a recent interview, the respected screen icon explained that the nature of payment in Nollywood is a major factor behind the issue
According to her, actors are only paid once for their roles, with no system of royalties to sustain them after production. This, she said, limits long-term earnings and affects financial stability
She contrasted the system with Hollywood, where actors continue to earn from their work long after release. In those industries, royalties provide steady income—even after death—benefiting their families
In Nollywood, however, she noted that such structures are largely absent, leaving actors dependent on one-time payments
Ozokwor added that this reality has pushed many of her colleagues to explore alternative platforms like YouTube, where content can generate continuous income rather than one-off earnings
“The reason why Nollywood actors and actresses are poor is because we don’t get royalties for what we do—we only get paid for our appearance at the shoot,” she said
“Go and look at even the smallest actors in developed countries. Every work they do brings in money daily. Even when they are gone, their families still benefit. We are still working hard. That’s why everyone is running to YouTube.
Her comments have since sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians sharing their views across social media.”
