Rivers Monarch Shot in Leg as Gunmen Attack His Convoy
The Rivers State Police Command has opened an investigation following an armed attack on the King of the Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty Suanu Timothy Baridam.
The monarch was shot in the leg on Sunday, January 25, 2026, while returning from an engagement in Okwale community. The incident occurred along the Taabaa Junction–Sogho axis when gunmen attempted to stop his vehicle. When the driver refused to halt, the assailants opened fire, injuring both the king and his driver.
King Baridam is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Port Harcourt. Police sources say he is responding to medical care. Although the motive behind the attack has not been officially established, initial reports suggest it may have been an assassination attempt. This is reportedly the second time the monarch has been targeted.
The Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Thomas Bariere, condemned the attack, dismissing claims that it was linked to gang activity. He described it as an attempt to create fear and disrupt peace and economic activities in the area, assuring residents that authorities are taking steps to address the situation.
Civil society groups have also raised concern, calling the attack an assault on traditional institutions and a threat to regional stability. The Rivers State Police have confirmed the incident and say a manhunt is ongoing, with security agencies working together to arrest those responsible.
