Trump Gives Russia 50 Days or Face Serious Tariffs Over Ukraine War
The Russia-Ukraine war has been on for a while now, making headlines all over the world. But just recently, something unexpected happened—U.S. President Donald Trump has come out with a tough warning: if Russia doesn’t end the war within 50 days, the U.S. will hit them with massive tariffs.
Yes, Trump clearly stated that “very severe tariffs” will be placed on Russia if no peace deal is reached. This statement came during a meeting at the White House with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Trump said he plans to impose 100% secondary tariffs not just on Russia, but also on any country still doing business with them. The aim is to isolate Russia economically by targeting their global trade partners.
In his words, Trump expressed his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said, “I thought we should’ve had a deal long ago”—referring to the many failed attempts at securing a ceasefire.
Right now, Ukraine is in a tough spot. They’re running low on ammunition and losing ground in the eastern part of the country. So, Trump also revealed a new plan: instead of U.S. taxpayers footing the bill, NATO allies will now be the ones paying for billions of dollars’ worth of U.S. weapons that will be sent to Ukraine.
Countries like Germany, the U.K., and Canada will buy things like Patriot missiles and air defense systems from the U.S. and then send them to Kyiv. According to Rutte, this move will deliver a massive supply of weapons to help Ukraine defend itself. This setup also aligns with Trump’s long-time push for Europe to carry more financial responsibility in military matters. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will oversee the delivery of these weapons.
Even though Trump said his talks with Putin have always been “very pleasant,” Russian missiles are still striking Ukrainian cities.
Now, this 50-day deadline comes after a peace talk in February completely broke down. During that Oval Office meeting, Trump and Vice President JD Vance didn’t hold back—they called out Ukrainian President Zelenskyy for what they saw as his lack of appreciation for the help the U.S. has already given.
Earlier in March, another ceasefire effort led by the U.S. also failed when Putin rejected a 30-day truce. Instead, he offered shorter ceasefires that Ukraine didn’t take seriously, seeing them as insincere moves.
