WAEC Reviews 2025 WASSCE Results Pass Rate Jumps to 62.96%

WAEC has made a major U-turn on the 2025 WASSCE results. Earlier this week, the council shocked the nation by announcing that only 38.32% of candidates got credits in at least five subjects, including English and Maths. Now, after a review, that figure has been corrected to 62.96%.

Speaking in Lagos on Friday, WAEC’s Head of National Office (Nigeria), Dr. Amos Dangut, said the initial low percentage was caused by a data glitch. With the corrected results, 1,718,090 candidates actually passed with credits in five or more subjects, English and Maths included.

A total of 1,969,313 students wrote the exams between April and June, out of 1,973,365 who registered from over 23,000 schools in Nigeria and a few Nigerian-curriculum schools in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea. The numbers were almost evenly split 976,787 males and 992,526 females plus 12,178 special needs candidates whose results were processed and released alongside everyone else’s.

Dr. Dangut also revealed that new exam security measures, like serialising objective test questions in core subjects such as English, Maths, Biology, and Economics, made it harder for malpractice to thrive this year.

Last year’s pass rate was 72.12%, so while 2025 still shows a drop, it’s not nearly as devastating as the first announcement suggested.
